Plastic ducks top the bill at Sheffield City Hall

A surprise appearance by several hundred yellow plastic ducks greeted the delegates of Sheffield’s International Business and Economy Summit recently. The duck invasion was perhaps not what people expected to find as they arrived at RE:Inventing Business with speakers from the world of finance, enterprise and international trade.

The ducks may well have been attracted to Sheffield following the recent rainstorms and had landed in the two fountains in Barker’s Pool. A more likely explanation is that they ‘escaped’ while being transported to the City Hall by local Sheffield business MoreComputers.com - a key sponsor of the event.

Keen ornithologists spotted the MoreComputers.com logo and the words ‘No nonsense’ emblazoned on the chest of the birds. When quizzed, Brian Trevaskiss of MoreComputers.com, said, ‘I’m still not sure what happened, they just made a break for it. We’d had them made as a give-away for the delegates, part of the summit is about innovation, enterprise and creativity so we wanted to get our no nonsense message across in an interesting way. We hate all those nonsense web sites with extra charges and hidden catches. Ducks just seem to make people smile and there’s not a lot to smile about in business at the moment.’

Not content with occupying the City Hall fountains some of the more adventurous ducks have now migrated to the Peace Gardens with some even being spotted as far as the train station water feature. There seems to be a trend linking inventive ducks and successful business emerging this week. Roman Abramovich one of the world's 50 wealthiest figures was reported on Monday as starting his business career selling plastic ducks from a grim Moscow apartment and now Sheffield businesses are meeting to get their ‘ducks in a row’ so to speak.

There's still some ducks unaccounted for - although I've got a feeling they may be attracted to the Sheffield University freshers fair in a couple of weeks.
