Top 10 Tips on Buying Promotional Luxury & Leather Goods by Paul Mason, Director, Anything Promotional

Posted in Editors Column on Wed 26 Aug 2009

Anything Promotional is a specialist company supplying stylish, designer business gifts from top European brands such as Cerruti 1881. The company also supplies point-of-sale material and environmentally conscious natural products.

The company’s website offers customers the ability to access and search a wide range of promotional and branded products, sourced from around the globe, to meet all budgets and deadlines.

Paul has over 10 years experience in the promotions industry and spent three years on the board of the bpma. He is one of the founders of Anything Promotional and these are his Top 10 Tips for buying promotional luxury and leather goods.

1. Consider the person receiving the gift. Leather can be an inappropriate gift for vegetarians and people of certain religious persuasions.

2. Find out if it’s appropriate to give an expensive business gift. Does the company policy allow the recipient to receive a gift over a certain value - in fact, does it allow gifts at all? Some recipients have to declare gifts, which might prove embarrassing if they are too opulent.

3. Branding and personalisation - you may not want to brand an expensive leather product as it could devalue it, so the alternatives are to brand the presentation box, put a personal message on a card inside or use very discreet branding.

4. If you are branding the actual product consider the best method - embossing can be suitably subtle but not always the best for smaller designs as definition is lost. Laser engraving produces sharper, better defined branding for smaller designs. Foil blocking is another alternative.

5. Keep in mind that the larger the embossed area the larger the embossing block has to be, thereby increasing the cost.

6. Budget - there are different grades of leather so know what you are buying, bonded or recycled leather is substantially cheaper than top grade leather.

7. Designer luggage now increasingly includes more areas of man made material with leather finishing and trim. This is more durable and keeps the weight down. Luggage made totally of leather is heavier and requires more upkeep.

8. Some luggage has lots of pockets and zips which reduces the print area opportunities. If so, consider attaching a tag with the company details.

9. Real leather can be pantone matched if required, dependant on the quantity.

10. Short lead times and low minimum order quantities (single units in some cases) make these aspirational goods very suitable for reward and motivation schemes, adding to the ease of fulfilment of such schemes.
